Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Founding Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, hosted the 10th session of the Open Talk series, titled “Education”, at the Group’s head office.
He stressed the need for a stronger focus on practical education in the UAE, pointing out that many students enter the workforce without adequate hands-on experience.
Sharing a personal example, he noted that when his son completed his hotel management studies, he was required to work in housekeeping — including tasks such as washing dishes — before progressing to a mid-level position.
Al Habtoor highlighted that professionals, including engineers, should gain substantial practical experience before joining the workforce to support sustainable career development.
He also voiced concern over the declining number of Arab children who speak their native language.
“Many of our children struggle to speak Arabic and tend to communicate in English. They should learn the history and culture of the Arab world. Our generation is the last that truly understands our heritage. The solution to this challenge begins with schools,” he said, adding that grandparents often speak to their grandchildren in Arabic, yet receive replies in English.
“We are ready to provide full support to help strengthen the teaching of the Arabic language in schools,” he stated.
